So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16
Satan is so uncreative. In fact, he has no power to create anything new. His power is only to take what is already created for good and find a way to distort it for evil. Lust is like that. Sexual desire in a God-ordained context is good, purposeful, fulfilling, and without compromise. Lust is Satan’s attempt to corrupt what God created.
Since we are all part of this broken world, we are vulnerable. Very vulnerable. Our adversary knows this. He wants to keep the broken struggle quiet. In the shadows. Hidden. So we suffer alone, terrified that our struggle might find its way into the light. Might be discovered. Yet the struggle is universal. We all lust for something. Let’s identify a person with whom we can find safety and support. Such places exist in the body of Christ.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, “The pious fellowship permits no one to be a sinner. So everybody must conceal his sin from himself and from the fellowship. We dare not be sinners. Many Christians are unthinkably horrified when a real sinner is suddenly discovered among the righteous. So we remain alone with our sin, living in lies and hypocrisy. The fact is that we are sinners” (Life Together). Let’s commit to supporting each other as we live out Galatians 5:16.
Dear Lord, thank you for forgiving me 100%. Thank you for victory over shame. Give me your resolve and your strength to gain victory one day at a time and lead me to others with whom to divulge my struggle. Amen.
