April 12 | Contentment

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:11-13


Is being content even possible? I can hear the Rolling Stones lyrics in my head: “I can’t get no… satisfaction… and I try, and I try, and I try!” There is so much that our hearts endlessly long for, especially deep down where our desires are to be loved, fulfilled, and happy. From prison, the apostle Paul shared a secret about contentment with the Philippian church: trust the one who gives you strength. Put your hope for the desires of your heart to be satisfied in him. David, King of Israel, said it like this: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and He will do this…” (Psalm 37:4-5).

Is it really that simple? Yes! But can I be honest? My default mode is not trusting that what God has or will provide is going to be sufficient. It’s probably not yours either. So don’t miss that Paul said he learned contentment. He was on the journey. We are too.  “Learning” means that we renew our mind with the gospel because that’s where the strength (the grace) to trust him more comes from. During this season of Lent, would you press in and keep finding ways to renew your heart with the gospel. Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen your faith. “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).

Father, you’ve already given me your best, your own Son. Would you open the eyes of my heart again and again to gaze at your inexhaustible grace and give me the strength to trust you in the moments and circumstances of this day? Considering all that you have already given me, how could you not give me whatever it is that you know I need to be satisfied in you.
