March 19 | God is Always Working

In his defense, Jesus said to the religious leaders, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
John 5:17

When I read this passage in the Bible, where Jesus is being accused of working on the Sabbath and he responds with the indication that he and our Father are always working, it reminds me that our God has no limits. He works continuously and never needs a day of rest. He never tires or grows weary (Isaiah 40.28). What exactly is he working on? All throughout the Bible, it is clear that because of God’s perfect love for us, he is working in everything for our good. He is focused on our redemption, restoration, and eternal position with him. The knowledge that God is alive and is always working for our good because he loves us should bring us hope. We can trust him. What peace that brings to my soul!

I wonder what circumstance you may have in your life right now that you are concerned about or where you wonder if God is really working on your behalf? You might be worried about how things will turn out and trying to figure out how you can control the outcome so it is what you want. I don’t think I’m alone when I confess that I often feel burdened with concerns, and at times, I have a hard time seeing where God may be working. In our flesh, we have difficulty seeing how things can change or turn out for the best. But that doesn’t mean that our God who loves us and has everything planned for our good isn’t working to that end. He is a God who keeps his promises and never changes. We need to remind ourselves and each other of this.

Even if we cannot see the outcomes, we can trust him and know that he is with us every step of the way and working on our behalf, for our good and for His glory. Praise be to God!

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the work that you have done in my life, where I have seen you work things out for my best because of your great love for me. I lay before you all the burdens on my heart, places where I want to see you move today and tomorrow. Lord, I pray that you would give me the strength and courage, by the power of your Holy Spirit, to trust that you are always working things out for my good and for your glory.
