Lenten Devotions

March 21 | Simplicity of Mind

I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.

Have you ever found yourself in a place where you have followed a news story or consumed a lot of social media and suddenly you’re all worked up over some issue? Have you ever gotten to the point where you’ve lost sleep over what you’ve watched or read? Maybe you’ve even gotten so fired up and consumed with a topic that you found yourself engaging in unhealthy online discussions regarding political, racial, or health-related topics. I think we can all get to a point where, if we’re not careful, we can lose perspective, even to the point of thinking that the world would be a better place if we just share our unique set of opinions!

What a great reminder Psalm 131 has been for me when I’m tempted to be overwhelmed or fired up by the steady bombardment of digital opinions. What a joy to step back, take a breath, and be small before our God. I certainly need to be reminded often of his big-ness and my small-ness. It’s in my being small, my bowing low that I find my freedom from my frustration and from the pride in my opinions. Would you take a few moments today to just be small before your God? Breath in his grace, breath out his praise, and feel the weights of this world fade.

Lord, so often I try to pick up burdens and worries that I wasn’t made to bear. Would you remind me today of your greatness and your faithfulness? In those moments where I’m tempted to get distracted, would you calm my heart with the knowledge that you are in control and that in you there’s nothing I need to fear. Let me be small before you today. Amen
