Let's start by reading Proverbs 8:22-31:
"The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of old.
Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there was no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth,
before he had made the earth with its fields,
or the first of the dust of the world.
When he established the heavens, I was there,
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
then I was beside him, like a master workman,
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always,
rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the children of man."
Every culture in the history of the world has had some sort of creation narrative. In some narratives the world emerges out of a splitting of two parents, and in others it’s the dismembering of god. Eastern stories typically see the creation of the world as an accident, or they see it as an endless cycle of universes coming in and out of existence. Western stories of creation tend to focus more on a violent action happening. Judaism and Christianity are different and say that the world was made by a personal God who, out of love, intentionally created the world to be lived in in a particular way.
Because the universe was created personally out of love, God has set forth some boundaries. Let's think of them as laws that the world operates by. For instance, if you were to jump off of the top of a building, you would be in the clutches of the laws of gravity. That would not be good for you. Just as there are physical laws that govern the universe, there are also relational laws, there are moral laws, and there are spiritual laws. All of these are ways that we live in accord with the way that God has made the world.
Notice in Proverbs that wisdom is personified. In Proverbs 8, wisdom tells of being with God when he created the heavens, marked the horizons, and he laid the foundation of the world. That same wisdom calls out to people so that they avoid living against the grain of life that God has created: "Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square" (Proverbs 1:20)
Jesus did the same thing in Matthew 11:28 when he said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart." This is not the yoke of “try harder” or “more performance.” It is the easy yoke connected to Jesus. In 1 Corinthians 1:24 Jesus is called “the power of God and the wisdom of God.”
Are you ready to listen to the wisdom of God today?
Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, it is easy for us to listen to a lot of other voices in this world that call out to us. Yet, there is a personal voice - the one who created the universe, who stills the chaos - and he calls us today because he wants to still the chaos in our hearts. Give us the ability and the space in our own hearts to listen to him. We thank you that his voice calls to us in love. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
